Whimsically named for the skull-shaped hat racks that flank the French entry doors, La Calaca is “the captain’s quarters”—home base for your hosts Rob & Diane—richly detailed with fine art and collectibles. The home is laid out on three levels. Ground floor boasts a gourmet kitchen; chandelier-lit mesquite dining table; step-down living room with two comfy sofas and large-screen home entertainment center (DVD + cable TV); powder room; and dining patio on the central garden court, complete with gas grill. Ascend the stairs (secure handrails both sides) to the second level, which houses the master suite with king-size bed crowned by a hammered-tin headboard and private bathroom with separate tiled shower and tub. Also on this level, a study with desk and electric piano, and a second bedroom with full bath and a queen-size Murphy bed—with bed stowed, the space converts into a meditation-yoga-fitness room.
The third level features an atrium sitting area (ideal for morning coffee!) and an orchid-filled solar greenhouse (that heats the home in winter—see Sustainable). The atrium opens onto a patio with a Parroquia view and solar-heated hot tub, plus garden planters brimming with flowers and vegetables—and a riot of hummingbirds that race between feeders that need refilling daily! (The very first night we sat in the hot tub, fireworks soared over the Parroquia, like the gateway to Disney’s Magic Kingdom…). Available seasonally, one week minimum. La Calaca receives daily attention for greenhouse, gardens and hummingbird feeders; plus linen changes, laundry and cleaning as needed by guests. Cooking, shopping and other services may be arranged directly with Eva.
